Present day Perugia like many Umbrian towns, owes its heritage to the many rulers who, following the Umbri, the founders of Umbria, destroyed it and rebuilt it over the millennia... Walking through the historic town's cobbled-stone streets, one comes across architectural reminders of the ancient Etruscans, Romans and Byzantine. One can taste their influence as well by sampling Umbria's rich culinary heritage and great wines; its university has been welcoming students from across Europe since the 1200's; it is quite fitting then for the city to be host of the famed Umbria Jazz festival each July , attracting jazz lovers from Europe and the rest of the world.
There is no doubt that Umbria Jazz artistic line-up features top performers of world-renown every year, so what better
way to enhance the experience than to combine it with the best of what Umbria is also known for, its culture, its art, its food, its wines, its fashions and prized ceramics.
All will be carefully incorporated within the ten days of this program to allow unrestricted access to the concerts. We'll begin with Perugia of course, it's majestic open squares, the Gothic Cathedral, Fontana Maggiore, Palazzo dei Priori, the Basilica of San Pietro and the perfection of the "Perugino" s frescos in the Sala delle Udienze at the Collegio del Cambio are not to be missed. Chocolate is king in Perugia and of course one cannot exclude a sampling of this sweet addiction.
Deruta, under Perugia's rule since the eleventh century, has been known for its prized ceramics practically since then. No doubt some of it will find its way back home with us! Not a precious moment is lost as along the way we'll stop at a top wine producer for a sampling of their Torgiano Rosso.
In Gubbio one can admire the mastery of the artists of the day in the Palazzo Ducale, Palazzo Pretorio, Palazzo dei Consoli, all vivid examples of the richness of its past.
Assisi as one of the most revered religious destinations in Italy needs little introduction. Certainly one cannot miss the imposing Basilica of St. Francis; visitors of all religious backgrounds can indeed appreciate and revel in its atmosphere of peace, tranquility and overall sense of spiritualism. A guided tour of the Basilica and Assisi's most important landmarks will be followed by some free time for lunch and to explore the quaint town center.
Along the shores of Lake Trasimeno, we'll step within the walls of an ancient XII century Benedictine Abbey and the castle thought to have been the seat of the ancient order of Templars. This is also the home of a highly regarded wine producer where we will tour the cellar, taste their wonderful Grechetto and indulge in a scrumptious lunch.
Great wine and food will be theme during visits to other top Umbrian wine producers who will proudly share their wines and succulent local specialties with us. There will also be an opportunity to learn the secrets of some of the wonderful local recipes by taking part in a hands-on cooking demonstration at the end of which we will sample the fruits of our labor, enhanced of course by the wonderful Umbrian wine.
A trip anywhere in Italy would not be complete without the obligatory shopping for fashion at its source. Exquisite cashmere, shoes and other apparel will be the theme for another morning excursion.
There is no doubt that we will have experienced the best that Umbria has to offer; some we'll have savored, some we'll be able to reproduce in our kitchens, some we'll wear for years to come but all be part of everyone's memories lasting a lifetime. Come and sizzle with us in Perugia!
