Maremma, The Undiscovered Tuscany
Independent Departure

Maremma & the Supertuscans, Chianti Classico, Brunello and Morellino
Group Size:
Minimum Participation 2 Passengers

A Tuscany tour unlike most featuring Maremma - the relatively unknown and "hottest" new destination in this most popular region is characterized by lush landscapes, nature preserves, pine forests, beaches and tiny coves. The home of the Tuscan cowboys today more than ever the Maremma is the perfect choice for the seasoned traveler. Maremma will provide new experiences as we make our way though the south western part of Tuscany touching upon ancient towns not yet household names even in Italy.
Remnants of Etruscan, Romans and Medieval cultures, their architecture and oenogastronomic traditions make this part of Tuscany exquisitely rich and unique.

We will begin our Tuscan adventure in Siena - the magnificent Medieval jewel situated in the heart of the Chianti classico area. Combining culture with visits to some of the best producers of the world-renowned wine will set the tone for the balance of our stay.

There will be an opportunity to learn some of the secrets of the Tuscan cuisine by taking part in a half-day cooking class at a family-run school. Pasta, soup or meat, you can be sure it will be something deliciously authentic as will be evidenced during our lunch.

The "traditional" Tuscany is not  excluded however as we head south through the most  celebrated countryside in the world reaching the famed Brunello producing zones. Along the way as we’ll come across picturesque medieval villages - we’ll visit an ancient abbey which as legend has it, was founded by Charles the Great in the year 781. If our timing is right, we may be lucky enough to catch the resident monks singing some angelic Gregorian chants.

Our first glimpse of Maremma is Massa Marittima where we’ll be guests at the luxurious   county estate, a beautifully restored ancient borgo, surrounded by soft rolling hills, pine trees and ancient olive groves.
Throughout our journey we will come upon vistas of the sea often visible from the many high vantage point; no doubt the proximity to the sea provides very distinct characteristics to the Maremman food and its highly acclaimed wines.

The week ahead will be one of carefree enjoyment of all that surrounds us and the carefully selected activities.
Not to be missed is a visit at a local frantoio to taste exquisite extra-virgin olive oils. Wine tastings at the top producers of Morellino, Supertuscans, Chianti and Brunello are sure to convert any undecided palate to the Tuscan elixir. The foods that complement them will be chosen from a wide range of the best local cuisine, served at family-run farms, the most hospitable winemakers, Michelin starred restaurants, perhaps a trattoria highly perched on the Island of Elba or amongst Etruscan ruins; no matter the setting or the menu, these combinations will be sure to prime our palate for only the best of the local gastronomic specialties.
A major highlight to be sure is the Island of Elba which we will reach by ferry boat in Porto  Ferraio, gateway to this island that housed Napoleon during his exile. Elba characterized by rocky cliffs, secluded coves and rugged terrain, is a contrast in landscapes, colors and unique ecosystems as we will discover during our excursion. From Porto Ferraio, we will make our way to secluded beaches, a seafood restaurant run by the local Slow Food representative and a winery producing the sweet nectar, Aleatico as well as the other superb DOC Elba Rosso and Elba Bianco.

A farewell dinner "Maremma" style will be a fitting end to this exquisite Tuscan adventure.
