A trip to Umbria is always a special occurrence, but when one travels to it with WBGO - the premier Jazz radio station in the US (if not the world!), with the main attraction being the amazing Umbria Jazz Festival in Perugia, and one also throws in the amazing Umbria wines and local specialties-well now we're really sizzling!
A better year could not have been chosen to kick off travel with WBGO, than the 40th. anniversary of the Umbria Jazz Festival in Perugia which promises to have a truly stellar line-up* (see below for confirmed performers)
Umbria owes its name to its original founders the Umbri but as early as the first millennium BC, it fell under the influence of the Etruscans. Walking through the historic Umbrian towns' cobbled-stone streets, one comes across architectural reminders of the ancient Etruscans as that of the Romans and Byzantine who followed. One can taste their influence as well by sampling Umbria's rich culinary heritage and great wines which we will have plenty of opportunities to appreciate.
Perugia's university has been welcoming students from across Europe since the 1200's; it is quite fitting then for the city to be host of the world-renowned Umbria Jazz festival, attracting jazz lovers from Europe and the world-over.
Our home-base during this amazing trip in Perugia will be the 5★ Deluxe Hotel Brufani Palace, without a doubt, the best hotel in the city, located right in the heart of its historic district, the epicenter of Umbria Jazz activities and within walking distance of all the concerts' venues.
There is no doubt that the Umbria Jazz festival will take center stage during this amazing tour, but what better way to enhance the experience than to combine it with the best of what Umbria is also known for-its culture, its art, its food and of course its wines!
But just to make this already outstanding program even more enticing, we have included a one-day's excursion to the imposing Montepulciano affording breathtaking views of the Tuscan countryside and opportunities to sample its prized Vino Nobile!
All activities will be carefully incorporated within the five days of this program to allow access to the main-stage concerts, with *preferred seating allocated to WBGO's members.
Our daily excursions will include Perugia, its majestic open squares, the Gothic Cathedral, Fontana Maggiore, Palazzo dei Priori, the Basilica of San Pietro and the perfection of the "Perugino" s frescos in the Sala delle Udienze at the Collegio del Cambio. Chocolate is king in Perugia and of course one cannot exclude a sampling of this sweet addiction.
Spello perched on a hill and held together by the still intact Roman walls
Other excursions will feature Montefalco, perched on a scenic hill overlooking the Tiber river is the epicenter for the cultivation of Sagrantino, a good red, dry, tannic wine, a perfect pairing with the local hearty foods of Umbria.
Bevagna The ancient small town had its origins during the Roman era, although its "modern-day" appearance is most likely the result of its developement during the Middle Ages.
Torgiano; Probably founded by the Etruscans, is situated on a hill overlooking the confluence of the Chiascio and Tiber rivers. In Roman times it was called Turris Amnium and today boasts a Wine Museum containing a precious collection of historical artistic and folkloric documents devoted to the art of wine-growing and wine-making.
Great wine and food will be a major focus of our attention during visits to top Umbrian wine producers such as Caprai, Lungarotti, and Cantina Gattavecchi in Montepulciano-all will proudly share their wines and succulent local specialties with us. The daily lunches, featuring typical specialties, will all accompanied by the perfectly paired Umbrian wines.
There is no doubt that throughout this trip we will have enjoyed the best that Umbria has to offer and coupled with the memories of the Umbria Jazz Festival, this will be an unforgettable experience.
